Keep the published version intact
In Shopify admin, open Online Store, locate the theme and choose Duplicate from its actions menu. Name the copy with its purpose and date. Make substantial changes there rather than experimenting on a live storefront. Use the current official admin interface as the reference.
A theme copy is not a store backup
Shopify explains that a theme download excludes store content such as products, collections, menus, pages, blog posts and uploaded files. Plan data backup and recovery separately. Check the appropriate store license before using a paid theme elsewhere; successful upload is not proof of authorization.
Preview before publishing
Check mobile navigation, variants, cart behavior, app blocks and target languages. Have someone outside the design process complete a test buying journey. Record the theme version, publishing time and rollback steps. Recheck after publishing rather than treating the editor preview as final acceptance.
